Another awesome Tico breakfast to start the day. We met a nice couple from the States who are our next door neighbors, Tom and Susan. They built a house here on a golf course and are working to move here full time. We've enjoyed hearing their story and have gotten some good advice in our conversations. After desayuna (breakfast) we decided to head out and see what there was to see and headed to Playa del Coco. I'm really getting to like our 1989 Garmin girl--she repeats the road number two times with gusto--and she hasn't let us down yet, so we're keeping her. We drove into Playa del Coco and explored the neighborhoods, realizing that the main road had a lot of Supermercados and other amenities and continuing to the beach area; "tourist traps" became prevalent. Outside of this area was where the Ticos lived, and the flora in and around these places was amazing. We tried to look like we knew what we were doing as we tried to take in all the ambience of the area. We continued on a small little road as we drove to Ocotal, our intended destination. We ended up following a van with a boat--just came upon him around one of the many sharp turns on this road. We couldn't pass him, not that I wanted to on this road, so we followed him. He led us right to the beach--no really, right to the beach--and he didn't stop! I pulled over and watched him drive down the sand and swing around to back his boat right into the ocean. Well I'll be! Thought we would get out for a look and marveled at the power of the ocean. Not prepped to spend the day at the beach, we got back in the car after grabbing a last look at the water and continued on. We decided to grab lunch in Playa del Coco, as Ocotal didn't have any places to eat that we could see. We enjoyed lunch and Sharon was working on her people watching resume, just in case it needed updating. After lunch we continued exploring, seeking some views of houses in the area. We took a little uphill road that delivered us into a residential area with nice houses--not sure if we were supposed go in here or not...we again tried to look like we knew what we were doing. Surprisingly, we didn't see anyone. These houses were high in the mountains about a quarter mile from the coast with, what had to be spectacular views of the ocean. We are guessing here as the houses blocked the view from the backyards. We decided to return "home" and be sure we had an opportunity to see the sunset. What time do you think the sun sets here? Well it's way earlier than I would have guessed. We needed our raincoats for our 200 yard walk to the beach as a light shower had begun. We started walking at 5:45 PM to see the sun set before 6:30 PM. We were hoping the cloud cover would dissipate and were disappointed, only for a short while. Our excitement rose as we realized that a group of Howler monkeys were in the trees lining the beach. If you've ever heard a Howler monkey on a science show; it doesn't come close to hearing them 30 feet above your head. Stay tuned for pictures coming after my upgrade kicks in. New phone pics are awesome but are big files for my free site to handle.
We had a late night dinner and then relaxed by the pool as Sharon crushed me in Cribbage. Our next day was a carbon copy exploring another area. We're finding that a lot of our destinations are ending up at what seem to be private neighborhoods, gated with a guard. So we didn't get to see much up close beaches, but had spectacular views while driving. We found a small Soda, small place serving food, and had another great meal. We spent the afternoon by the pool in the sun as the clouds cleared away for this afternoon. The clouds returned as we were hoping to see the sun set...foiled again! Only 50 more chances on this trip. Another wonderful dinner and we were back by the pool so Sharon could crush me for the second time in Cribbage; not sure I like this game anymore, Ha!
